How Do We Celebrate the Holidays in Tempe, Arizona?
One may ask, how is it even possible to get in the Holiday spirit with sunny skies, temperatures in the 70’s, and not an ounce of snow? As an (almost) native Arizonan, I would say that Arizona is very festive, but we celebrate it with a twist. Of course we have our decorations, holiday parties, and traditional eats, but we often are wearing flip-flops and sunglasses while enjoying these.
In Arizona, the average December temperature high is in the mid-60’s – hardly freezing. It does, however, get to those near-freezing and sometimes even below freezing temperatures at night. So while we might own one light-weight jacket, it is not uncommon to find the neighbors hanging Christmas lights while wearing shorts. We Arizonans can easily get sunburned while enjoying lunch on the patio in December, too.
So back to the original question, how do we get in the Holiday spirit in Arizona? It’s easy. We have tons of family-friendly events because we have such great weather to enjoy them. In Tempe alone, we have a Festival of Lights Boat Parade, Electric Light Parade on Mill Avenue, the Desert Botanical Gardens Luminarias, and the Zoolights at the Phoenix Zoo, just to name a few.
We invite you to pack those flip-flops and sunglasses (and light-weight jacket) and come enjoy the Holiday season at Tempe Mission Palms.
